Strawberry picking

We have been doing all sorts of fun activities this summer trying to check off some of my daughter’s ideas on her summer vision board.

One of the ideas I suggested was going strawberry picking at Mortimer Farms. We’ve been there during their Corn Festival (in September) a few years back and we loved it, especially because we got to leave hot blazing Phoenix and enjoy a cooler weather in Dewey, AZ. If you live in Phoenix, you may agree with me that any destination a few degrees cooler is much appreciated and sought out during the summer.

The kids loved the idea of going to Mortimer Farms. We have small garden at home and they really enjoy gardening and taking care of their plants, so it was a no brainer that they would like to go.

Strawberry picking is only available on weekends from and they open at 7:00am which is perfect, because my kids are early risers. The Farm is only an hour away from us, so it is the perfect destination for a day trip!

We invited my kids' BFF and his mommy to come along. We packed the kids and off we went. We arrived before 8am and were the only ones there so we had the whole farm to ourselves!

We entered the Farm’s Country Store and were greated by the baker, who gave us a run through, handed us our buckets and led us to Strawberry field.

We paid a $5 fee to pick strawberries and once we were done, they weighed our pick and charged $3 per/lb.

We had a great time picking strawberries and before going back to store to weight our berries, we also picked some red and white onions, beautiful zucchini blossoms and tomatillos. Vegetables are $7 per/lb.

When we entered the Country Store, the smell of banana bread permeated the entire store, it smelled amazing!  I wanted to eat the entire pastry display. Everything looked and smelled delicious. Had it not been because I am trying to be good and eat less carbs, I would have bought everything!

I think the best part of our day at the farm, was that our kids now know were strawberries come from, and the fact they picked them was such a cool thing for them.    They were so proud of themselves!

Every time the kiddos picked, we were called out “look, I found another one”.

Needless to say the strawberries didn’t last long! My kids like to have a fruit medley at night while we read books and my daughter would request “the strawberries that we picked”

We had a great time and we will definitely go back in a few months to the Corn Festival.
